The eight masterful stories in this new collection are all told in the first person by a classic Murakami narrator: a lonely man. I did not find it easy to make sense of it. According to the writer himself this story is autobiographical and he has even mentioned the name Haruki Murakami. What a lineup they had then-Hiraoka as manager, Matsuoka their star pitcher, and Wakamatsu their power hitter. Except for "Haruki Murakami" in The Yakult Swallows Poetry Collection, all of the narrators in the stories are unnamed. "When I write novels," he continues in the short story "The Yakult Swallows Poetry Collection," "I often experience the same feeling as the young man. For example, "The Yakult Swallows Poetry Collection" finds a baseball-loving writer named Haruki Murakami musing on his favorite team and the ties that bind us together. The most autobiographical piece, 'The Yakult Swallows Poetry Collection', takes up Murakami's familiar love of baseball but also opens up surprising new vistas, not least in showing him try his hand at poetry.
